February 16, 2012 - The King George County School Board announced today that it will begin the process of hiring a new superintendent by seeking public input on qualifications for a new superintendent.

The School Board will make available a survey related to superintendent criteria, which will be sent home with children in the King George County Public Schools, provided to staff and made available at http://www.quia.com/sv/566837.html. Extra copies of the survey will also be available at the Smoot Library and the YMCA. In addition to the survey, the Board will hold a Public Hearing immediately before its regularly scheduled board meeting on February 27. The Public Hearing will begin at 5 p.m. and will be held at the King George County School Board Office.

“Hiring a new superintendent is the biggest task facing a School Board and we want to make sure that the public has a voice in this process,” said School Board Chair Michael Rose. “We hope that parents, staff and residents will take time to fill out the survey or attend the public hearing.”

Food Service Fees Announcement

Section 205 of the Healthy, Hunger - Free Kids Act of 2010 (Public Law - 296) requires SFAs participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) to ensure that schools provide the same level of support for lunches served to students paying for lunch as for lunches served to students eligible for free lunch. This provision is effective July 1, 2011, for school year 2011-2012 and applied to student lunch prices.  For more information, follow this link, Food Service Fees.

Transportation Notice

In an effort to provide parents and guardians with current bus information, we have contacted KG Alert and have been able to establish a specific alert group identified as “Bus Transportation”.

Our intent is to send a morning and afternoon KG Alert identifying all buses that will have substitute drivers.  While having a substitute driver does not mean the bus will be picking students up late in the morning or dropping them off late in the afternoon, it will alert parents and guardians to this possibility.  Additionally, if it is known that a bus will be late, an alert will be sent.

If you are interested in receiving these KG Alerts, please go to www.kgalert.com and subscribe to “Bus Transportation”.  KG Alerts to this group will begin on Monday, November 15, 2010.

If you do not have a computer to register with KG Alert and would like to sign up for the alert group, please know that computers are available at Smoot Library for public use.  You, also, can contact the School Board Office and arrangements will be made for you to use a computer for sign-up purposes.

Again, hopefully, this will provide updated information regarding any irregularities in the transportation schedule.

Student Safety

Our children are our most precious resource. As a School Division and a community of parents, it is our responsibility to provide our children with the skills to stay safe and protect themselves from potential dangers. As a parent, you play a critical role in your child's safety. You are the best person to teach your child about personal safety. Begin talking to your child now, building an open relationship that allows for continued discussion as your child grows.

The Governor's Office  in Virginia has published a booklet about safety concerns and how parents can provide support and awareness to their children about risky behaviors and how to help prevent dangerous situations. This guide is designed to give you a greater awareness about some threats to the safety of our children and assist you in talking to your child about how to protect themselves. This guide can be downloaded from  http://www.gosap.state.va.us/pdf/PCF-booklet.pdf

Sex offenders pose dangers to student safety

King George County Public School Division recognizes the danger sex offenders pose to student safety. Each school receives notification of the registration of any sex offender in the same or contiguous zip codes. The information is available to the public at http://sex-offender.vsp.virginia.gov/sor/
