Governor's Schools

King George County Public Schools participate in several Governorís Schools supported by the Virginia Department of Education.  Opportunities for high school students include the Commonwealth Governor's School, Chesapeake Bay Governorís School, and the Summer Residential Governorís Schools. Fredericksburg Summer Regional Governorís School is for students currently in grades 6-11 identified for gifted education services in KGCS.

Fredericksburg Summer Regional Governorís School ó two-week enrichment in science and mentorships for identified gifted students. The program serves students in grades 6-11.  *Applications will be available from Gifted Resource Teachers on February 17, 2014.  Applications will be due March 17, 2014.  Contact your gifted resource teacher or counselor for more information.

Chesapeake Bay Governorís School

The Chesapeake Bay Governorís School (CBGS) provides an educational option for highly motivated and talented students interested in or with an aptitude for math, science, and technology.  Sophomores, juniors and seniors from thirteen participating school divisions in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions in Virginia attend the Governorís School during the morning at one of three sites:  Rappahannock Community College-Glenns Campus, Rappahannock Community College-Warsaw Campus or Bowling Green High School in Caroline County.

The CBGS program operates under a shared day model where students attend the CBGS at their regional site for half of the school day and attend their home high school for the other half of the day.  KGCPS students attend CBGS at the Bowling Green Site in the morning and King George High School classes in the afternoon.  KGHS school counselors work to arrange student schedules accordingly.

KGCPS students are selected to attend the CBGS through a rigorous application process that includes a student essay, teacher recommendations, standardized test scores in math and science, and academic preparation. An informational meeting for interested parents and students is held in November of each year and applications are reviewed in February/March.

Contact your School Counselor for assistance or call (540) 775-3535.

NOTE: The Chesapeake Bay Governor's School is a rigorous program focusing on marine and environmental science. Strong candidates for this program must have completed Algebra I and Geometry to apply.

 The Commonwealth Governor's School

Based on a school-within-a-school model, the half-day program at The Commonwealth Governorís School utilizes real-time interactive audio/visual technology, field trips, and team teaching to create a regional community of learners.

Students from Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford school divisions are offered a rigorous program of study while interacting with other talented students in the region.

Students from participating high schools travel to one of the six Commonwealth Governorís School sites: Colonial Forge High School, North Stafford High School, Stafford High School, Spotsylvania High School,  Riverbend High School, and King George High School.  King George High School is fortunate to have its own site for students to attend.

The Commonwealth Governorís School curriculum is designed to challenge students in four major academic content areas, through problem-based instruction appropriate for gifted and highly motivated learners and to focus on the community issues of environment, development, and service.

KGCS students are selected to attend the CGS through a rigorous application process that includes a writing sample, teacher recommendations, standardized test scores, and academic preparation. An informational meeting for interested parents and students is held in November of each year and applications are reviewed in February/March.
