Assessment and Accountability

Teachers will administer regular curriculum-based and SOL aligned assessments according to KGCS pacing guides.  Assessments may be used for grading and reporting progress to students and families. There will be division Common Assessments in each content area that can be used to measure growth in a format that is comparable to SOLs.

VALLSS - Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System - is a one-on-one assessment used to identify students who may be at risk for reading difficulties. It's required for all PreK-8 students in Virginia public schools, with specific requirements based on grade level and testing windows. The VALLSS assesses various literacy skills, including phonics, morphology fluency, and comprehension, and results inform targeted interventions. 

Lexia  - The Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) mandates evidence-based literacy instruction for all K-5 students, and Lexia Core5 is one tool that can help schools meet these requirements in K-5. In Virginia, Lexia PowerUp is approved for use in grades 6-8 as a supplemental and intervention program for students needing literacy support. The VLA mandates that schools use science-based reading research and evidence-based literacy instruction for students in grades K-8. Lexia PowerUp is designed to address skill gaps in word analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, helping students achieve multiple years of literacy growth. 

VKRP - Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program - requires all public kindergarten students to be assessed in the fall and spring.  VKRP is a state-selected assessment system that measures early math skills, self-regulation, and social skills to complement language and literacy assessments. 

Star (K-2) and IXL (3-8) - Virginia's math remediation requirements emphasize early identification, specific guidelines for intervention program structure and delivery, and accountability through ongoing assessment and data reporting.  School divisions must collect and annually report data regarding their programs and the students served to the VDOE.

Growth Assessments - Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is a state requirement for students in grades 3-8. It measures student growth in reading and mathematics, and is administered twice a year, in the fall and winter, aligned with the Standards of Learning (SOL).  This is an untimed assessment that must be completed in one day.  

PBA - Performance based assessment - a project based assessment allowed to be given and scored by the division instead of an SOL test.  

SOLs - Students in Virginia public schools are assessed using Standards of Learning (SOL) tests to gauge their achievement. These assessments are designed to measure whether students meet the state's expectations for learning and achievement in various subjects.  This is an untimed assessment that must be completed in one day.
