The 2024 VIrginia Commonwealth General Assembly passed the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).
The VLA provides support tools, resources, technical assistance, and funding for students in kindergarten through third grade in the 2024-2025 school year but will expand to include fourth through eighth grade in the 2025-2026 school year.
King George County Schools is ready to support our students and their families with the VLA's implementation. We will provide:
• scientifically-based reading research and evidence-based literacy and intervention curriculums,
• training for our staff to instruct with approved curriculum and better understand the Science of Reading research,

• Reading Specialists who are trained in the Science of Reading and can coordinate interventions and collaborate on reading plans for students not meeting universal screening benchmarks,
• a Division Literacy Plan outlining our timeline of VLA implementation, and
• student reading plan families online literacy supports.
