FAQ King George County Schools - Variances

Do I need to fill out a new Variance Request Form if I was approved in the 2019-20 school year?No. To streamline our variance request procedure, KGCS will extend to the 2020-21 school year your existing variance approval for your student(s). If I am a new family registering in King George and I am requesting a variance do I need to fill out a Variance

Request Form for 2020-21 school year?
Yes. Please contact your zoned school of residence to complete the registration process. You will submit your variance request to the registrar at that time. 

If my student(s) is in the gifted or special education program at King George Elementary School, do I need to fill out a Variance Request Form for a sibling to attend in the 2020-21 school year?
If your son or daughter's sibling was not approved in the 2019-20 school year for a variance, you will need to fill out a Variance Request Form for the 2020-21 school year.

If I had a student(s) attending a school via an approved variance for the 2019-20 school year, and the approved student has a sibling that I prefer to attend the same school, do I need to submit a variance request for the 2020-21 school year? 
Yes. The sibling’s variance request will be approved space permitting.

Important Notice - March 30, 2020

Governor Executive Order 55

This Executive Order shall be effective March 30, 2020, amends Amended Order of the Governor and State Health Commissioner Declaration of Public Health Emergency, Order of Public Health Emergency One and Executive Order 53, and shall remain in full force and in effect until June 10, 2020, unless amended or rescinded by further executive order. Read the Official Letter from the Governor of Virginia.

Important Notice - March 27, 2020

Covid-19 Letter To Community

Dr. Robert Benson sent out a letter to KGCS Families. In the letter, he wrote, " Our buildings were closed two weeks ago, abruptly halting our daily ritual of gathering to teach, nourish, and tend to our students' developmental needs. While the ritual of congregating for school has temporarily ceased, we are continuing to serve our students and families remotely and safely in order to bring the school year to a successful conclusion." Virginia Department of Education Important information for the Class of 2020

The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has issued new guidance regarding seniors planning to graduate this school year. Visit the VDOE website and look for the News Releases section at the bottom of the page. KGCS staff are developing additional details for students. Further updates will be provided as soon as possible.

The VDOE has created a guide to serve as a resource for parents, families and caregivers on a variety of topics related to COVID-19 and their students.

Important Notice - March 23, 2020

In accordance with the Governor's announcement, all King George County Schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year. Dr. Lane, our State Superintendent of Instruction, will be forwarding guidance to local divisions over the next few days which will help us address questions and adjust our plan for learning resources for the remainder of the school year. Please continue to monitor our website and School Messenger for updates.

Important Notice - March 21, 2020

During the closure of schools due to COVIG-19, KGCS will provide "grab and go" meals on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the following locations: King George Elementary, King George High School, Potomac Elementary School, Sealston Elementary School, and in Fairview Beach near the Shore Store.  These meals are no cost and are for any child ages 2-18. 

Important Notice - March 18, 2020

We will again have no cost “grab and go” lunch and breakfast available for children ages 2-18 at the following locations tomorrow (Thursday 3/19) from 11:30 to 12:30:

King George Elementary School

King George High School

Potomac Elementary School

Sealston Elementary School

Fairview Beach near the Shore Store

All are welcome, we plan to distribute two day’s worth of food tomorrow - there will be no grab and go service this Friday 3/20.

Important Notice - March 17, 2020

Recommended learning resources for at-home practice will be available on the KGCS Website beginning Monday, March 23, 2020. Print copies of materials, for those without internet access, will be available for curbside pickup at your child's school on Monday, March 23 from 11:30 am to 12:30 am. 

New resources will be posted or available for pickup each Monday during the closure featuring different subjects on a rotating basis. For more information about the continuity of learning resources, please refer to the King George County Schools website. 

Important Notice - March 16, 2020

  • Beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020, school offices will open from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM daily for urgent needs (i.e. medication pickup, records, etc).
  • All KGCS employees, please reference the email sent to all employees today or contact your supervisor regarding work status while schools are closed due to COVID-19.

VDH is monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness, called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a novel (new) coronavirus that was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. C
ases of COVID-19 are also being reported in a growing number of countries internationally, including the United States, where the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on January 21, 2020 in a traveler who had recently returned from Wuhan.
