New Student Pre-Registration 2021-2022

2020 - 2021 School Year (current school year ends May 27)

If you are registering a new or returning student for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, please contact your child's school directly for more information. Be sure to tell them you are registering for the current school year.

2021 - 2022 School Year (next school year begins August 9)

Only NEW STUDENTS need to register for the 2021-2022 school year.

  • If your child is currently enrolled in KGCS, regardless of whether they are virtual or in person, you do not need to re-register for next year.
  • If your child previously attended KGCS, but withdrew and is returning for the 2021-2022 school year, you do need to register as a new student by following the steps below.

New Student Registration - 2021-2022 School Year

All families must complete an online pre-registration to begin the new student registration process. After completing the Pre-registration Form, families will be contacted to schedule virtual and in-person registration appointments.

For new kindergarten students, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 30, 2021. If your child will not meet kindergarten age requirements, your child may be eligible for one of our preschool program options. For more information about our Early Childhood Special Education Services, Peer Model, or Head Start and VPI classes, please call 540-775-8639. Head Start and VPI applications can be found at:

Variance Requests

  • Students must register with the school that is zoned for their residence. If you aren't sure which school your home is zoned for, please call the Transportation Department at 775-3870 or view the School Attendance Zone map on the KGCS Transportation webpage.

  • Variance applications (click here) for non-employees are available on the division website. Requests must be submitted by June 4, 2021.

  • Variance determinations are based in part on class size. Decisions will be made after July 1. If you have questions about variances, please contact Stacey Hilderbrand at 775-5833 x 8605.

Instructional Model

KGCS will provide in-person instruction full-time, 5 days a week for the 2021-2022 school year. If your child has documented medical needs that may necessitate a virtual option, KGCS is partnering with Virtual Virginia to provide limited virtual instruction. More information can be found in the FAQ on the main KGCS website. It is not known what COVID-19 prevention strategies, such as masks, will be required this fall. Families are encouraged to register their students as soon as possible to provide accurate potential enrollment counts for planning purposes. Registering your child now also adds your contact information to our communications database to ensure you are included in future surveys and data collection needs in planning for the 21-22 school year.

Additional Opportunities

KGCS is in the process of planning summer opportunities for school tours, screening days, and meet and greets. More information will be provided through School Messenger, Parent Portal, and the division website.
