Self-Selected Reading Initiative

Students at KGMS will be reading a minimum of 15 self-selected books during the year to increase their reading motivation, vocabulary, and stamina.

Research has found time and again that students who engage in free reading on a regular basis are more successful academically. Developing an authentic interest in reading outside of school can have a powerful impact on every child's achievement in school.

Our goal is to help students develop a habit of reading for pleasure and information that they will carry into high school, college, and adulthood. Therefore, we will strive to match students with books that will ignite their interest in reading.

The Language Arts department is planning ways to hold students accountable for their reading without an overwhelming number of projects and reports. A minimum of one hour each week will be provided during school, and the rest of the reading will be completed as a standing homework assignment.
