What is Child Find?
King George County Public Schools participates in an ongoing process of locating, evaluating and identifying youth ages 2 through 21 inclusive who are disabled and may be in need of special education services under IDEA or provisions under Section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This includes wards of the state and those who attend a home-school or private school which are located within the geographic boundaries of King George County.
Any child who is identified as having a disability and requires special education is entitled to a free and appropriate public education designed to meet their needs.

Referral Process
Referrals can be made by anyone concerned with the child's developmental/educational performance.
Who can Make the Referral?
- Parent
- Child's Teacher
- Community Agency
- School Official
For Preschool Age children, parents are required to complete a registration form as part of the screening paperwork. This form will be used for data purposes only (Registration at the base school does not mean that the student is enrolled at that school.)
What to bring to the screening:
- The child for whom there are concerns.
- Valid parent/guardian government issued picture ID.
- Any pertinent medical, developmental or speech/ language reports you have regarding your child.
- The completed registration, referral and/or screening forms that will be sent via email, mail or parent may pick up.
Should further assessment be needed , the parent will be required to bring in the following documentation.
- Parent will be asked to provide proof of residency in King George County, VA. The following documentation must be provided, and must include
- one of the following: homeowner/mortgage verification to include mortgage statement, deed, ratified sales agreement; and/or rental agreement/lease; AND
- one of the following: real estate tax bill/statement, homeowner's/renter's insurance, current utility bill or letter of account from utility company (gas, electric, or water only). All documents must be current, valid, and reflect the parent's name and address being used.
- Your child's official, state-issued birth certificate.
Please Note: If proper identification, proof of residency and birth certificate are not available, we will not be able to proceed with the process and/or screening.

Typical signs of development
By two years:
- drinks from a cup
- refers to self by name
- uses a spoon with some spilling
- asks for desired items by name
- uses two word phrases, "mommy go"
- walks up and down stairs
By three years:
- holds a crayon and imitates circles and lines
- can demonstrate number concepts one and two
- can identify big and little
- responds to simple directions
- identifies objects by use," what do you wear on your feet?"
- asks questions
- uses three to four word phrases
- runs, jumps, and throws a ball
- others can understand about 50% of the child's speech
By four years:
- copies a circle and cross
- draws a person with 3 parts
- matches 6 colors
- counts to 5
- listens to story for 5 minutes
- understands prepositions (on,under,etc)
- responds to two step directions
- answers "if", "what" and "when" questions
- snips with scissors
- others understand about 90-100% of the child's speech
