Health Services

In compliance with KGCS policy, we do not administer or supervise prescriptions nor medical treatments without a physician's order and written parent or guardian permission. The first dose or administration of any medication or treatment should be done at home.  A new medication treatment form must be completed annually and on file at the school clinic for any medication/treatment administered at school or during school activities. The most frequently used health care plans and the medication/treatment forms can be found in the forms section of this page.

Individual arrangements need to be made for transporting medication to and from the school. Students are not permitted to transport medication to or from school. All medications must be presented in their original pharmacy container with the student's name, name of medication, name of prescribing physician, and dosage. This medication must be accompanied by a physician's medication order and parental permission for administration.

All medications/supplies must be picked up by parents by the last day of school or they will be discarded by school personnel.

Vision and hearing screenings are mandated by Code of Virginia Law 22.1-273 for all new students and students in grades K, 3, 7, and 10. The school nurse will schedule screenings during the first 60 days of school and referrals will be sent home if your student does not pass either screening. If you do not not wish to participate and would like to provide a screening by your family physician, please contact your school nurse.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Schools

School staff are responsible for keeping all children safe in the school setting. School staff do not have the staffing capacity to support unique requests for frequent glucose pattern management techniques at school (e.g. sugar surfing). Diabetes care at school will be provided in accordance with the regimen prescribed in the student’s DMMP/healthcare orders.

Parents are responsible for setting the alarms and notifying the school nurse of the parameters. Alarms should be set for when treatment is needed and to minimize disruption of the student’s participation in school-sponsored activities/education.

Eating disorders are serious health problems that usually start in childhood or adolescence and affect both girls and boys. With early diagnosis, eating disorders are treatable with a combination of nutritional, medical, and therapeutic supports.

In 2013 Virginia General Assembly passed a law requiring each school board to provide parent educational information regarding eating disorders on an annual basis to students in the fifth through twelfth grades. It is important to note that eating disorders are not diagnosed based on weight changes as much as behaviors,
attitudes, and mindset. Symptoms may vary between males and females and in different age groups. Often, a young person with an eating disorder may not be aware that he/she has a problem or keeps the issues secret. Parents/guardians and family members are in a unique position to notice symptoms or behaviors that cause
concern. Noting behaviors common to people with eating disorders may lead to early referral to the primary care provider. It is important for eating disorders to be treated by someone who specializes in this type of care.

In King George County Schools (KGCS):

1.  Students engage in lessons regarding healthy eating and mental health awareness through their Health and PE classes using the Virginia Health SOLs.
2.  During the first week of Health class, Health and PE teachers send the ‘TIPS: Eating Disorders Educational Information’ to all parents of students in grades 5-12 who are enrolled in PE.
3.  KGCS provides this and other required notifications annually in the Student and Family Handbook and on the KGCS website.

Head Lice Management

This information is being provided to all parents of students in grades 5-10 as required by the Code of Virginia 22.1-273.1 Annual Screening for Scoliosis:
Requirement for parental information or screening program implementation for scoliosis detection, grades five through ten.

Scoliosis Information

• A tilted head that does not line up over the hips.
• Uneven shoulders or a protruding shoulder blade
• Uneven waist
• One hip that is higher than the other causing an uneven hem or shirt line
• Leaning more to one side than another

Treatment
The type of treatment used depends on the cause and how severe the curve. Spinal curvature is measured by degrees. Most curves remain small and need only to be watched by a doctor for any signs of progression. If a curve does progress, your physician may use an orthopedic brace to prevent it from getting worse. Children who require treatment with orthopedic braces can continue to participate in the full range of physical and social activities.

If a scoliosis curve is severe when it is first seen, or if treatment with a brace does not control the curve, surgery may be necessary. In these cases surgery has been found to be highly effective.

Va. Code § 22.1-206.02(D) requires that all public schools in Virginia provide students in grades 9-12 with a fentanyl informational one-sheet developed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH).
