Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children
Visit the Virginia Dept of Education webpage to learn more about the Military Compact.

Virginia is home to some of the nation’s largest and most important military installations, so it is not surprising that Virginia schools educate more military children than any other state in the nation. As of September 2023, there are more than 77,000 military-connected students residing and attending public schools across the Commonwealth.

Virginia is a proud member of the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children (Military Compact) and is committed to the care and education of the children of the men and women of our armed forces.

Who can I contact if I need help?

In Virginia, most school divisions have two liaisons to assist with military family transitions. The primary function of the liaisons is to provide support to DoD-eligible families with school-age children to ensure smooth transitions between schools and positive educational experiences.

The Division Point of Contact for Military Support (POC) is a school division staff member. They are the primary point of contact for questions related to Military Connected Families and the Military Compact.

In addition, families may access the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). EMFP managers (EFMP’s) are equipped to provide information, resources, skills, and support to help military families with special needs navigate their systems of care. As families gain confidence, they become effective advocates for themselves and their family members, improving the quality of life. Find your EFMP here
