School Closures and Delays

When bad weather is expected, KGCS works closely with local emergency services and police. We evaluate road conditions, check school campuses, and review weather reports. A decision to delay or close schools is made as early as possible. 

When making these decisions, student and staff safety is our top priority. We carefully review road conditions reported by our Transportation team, monitor forecasts, consult with the Sheriff’s Office and VDOT, and consider the safety of student drivers. Our goal is to make the best possible decision for everyone in the county.

Whenever possible, we make these decisions early to give families time to plan. Please note that no announcements will be made when schools are operating on a normal schedule.

Once a decision is made, we notify:

• Local radio and TV stations

• The school division’s website and social media pages

• The mass communication system (School Messenger) – phone, email, and text message

Safety Comes First

Our goal is to keep students and staff safe. Thank you for working with us to make sure everyone stays safe during severe weather!

Two-Hour Delay

• Students should be at the bus stop two hours later than usual.

• Students dropped off by family should arrive two hours later than normal.

• Early arrivals may be unsafe since staff may not be available to provide supervision, and the building may still be closed.

Early Dismissals

If schools close early due to an emergency, families should have a plan in place.

Weather Codes

Closed Code 1- All schools and facilities are closed. No employees are to report.

Closed Code 2- All schools are closed for students. 12 month employees are to report 2 hours after normal start time or as directed by their supervisor. Employees may use leave as an alternative to reporting.

Closed Code 3- All schools are closed for students. Essential employees report as directed by supervisors.
