Governor's School Programming

King George County Schools participate in several Governor's Schools supported by the Virginia Department of Education. Opportunities for high school students include the Commonwealth Governor's School, the Chesapeake Bay Governor's School, and the Summer Residential Governor's Schools. Fredericksburg Summer Regional Governor's School is for students currently in grades 6-11 identified for gifted education services in KGCS.

Fredericksburg Summer Regional Governor's School - two-week enrichment in science and mentorships for identified gifted students. The program serves students in grades 6-11 and is held at James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg City. *Applications are typically available in the winter. Chesapeake Bay Governor's School Serving Students in Grades 10-12

The Chesapeake Bay Governor's School (CBGS) provides an educational option for highly motivated and talented students interested in or with an aptitude for math, science, and technology. Sophomores, juniors and seniors from thirteen participating school divisions in the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck regions in Virginia attend the Governor's School during the morning at one of three sites: Rappahannock Community College-Glenns Campus, Rappahannock Community College-Warsaw Campus or Bowling Green High School in Caroline County.

The CBGS program operates under a shared day model where students attend the CBGS at their regional site for half of the school day and attend their home high school for the other half of the day. KGCS students attend CBGS at the Bowling Green Site in the morning and King George High School classes in the afternoon. KGHS school counselors work to arrange student schedules accordingly.

KGCS students are selected to attend the CBGS through a rigorous application process that includes a student essay, teacher recommendations, standardized test scores in math, and academic preparation. An informational meeting for interested parents and students is held in December of each year and applications are reviewed in January-March.  Contact your School Counselor for assistance.

The Chesapeake Bay Governor's School is a rigorous program focusing on marine and environmental science. Strong candidates for this program must have completed Algebra I and Geometry to apply.

The Commonwealth Governor's School Serving Students in Grades 9-12

The Commonwealth Governor's School is based on a school-within-a-school model, the half-day program at utilizes real-time interactive audio/visual technology, field trips, and team teaching to create a regional community of learners.

Students from Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania and Stafford school divisions are offered a rigorous program of study while interacting with other talented students in the region.

Students from participating high schools travel to one of the six Commonwealth Governor's School sites: Colonial Forge High School, North Stafford High School, Stafford High School, Spotsylvania High School, Riverbend High School, and King George High School. King George High School is fortunate to have its own site for students to attend.

The Commonwealth Governor's School curriculum is designed to challenge students in four major academic content areas, through problem-based instruction appropriate for gifted and highly motivated learners and to focus on the community issues of environment, development, and service.

KGCS students are selected to attend the CGS through a rigorous application process that includes interviews, portfolios, teacher recommendations, standardized test scores, and academic preparation. The Commonwealth Governor's School is a rigorous program focusing on math, science, history, and English. Candidates for this program must have completed Algebra I by the end of 8th grade to apply.
