New Student Registration

Only NEW STUDENTS need to register for the 2021-2022 school year. If your child is currently enrolled in KGCS, regardless of whether they are virtual or in person, you do not need to re-register. More information about virtual and in-person options for next year will be announced at a later date.

If you are registering a new student for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, please contact your child's school for more information.

For students that will be new to KGCS in 2021-2022, please read the following carefully.

  1. Pre-Registration: The new student registration process will begin online by completing the Pre-Registration Form (click here). Pre-registration will begin on:
    • April 1 for new students in kindergarten and first grade
    • May 1 for new students in 2nd – 12th grade

After completing the pre-registration form, you will receive an automatic email of your responses. Do not lose this email. You will need it to make any changes, such as email addresses or phone number.

  2. Appointment Scheduled: After families complete the Pre-Registration Form, they will be contacted by division staff to schedule a registration appointment. We anticipate most families will be contacted within two weeks and we appreciate your patience. Appointments will be held virtually to the extent possible. Walk-in registrations cannot be accommodated at this time.

  3. Registration Packet: Prior to the registration appointment, families will complete the New Student Registration Packet (click here). Families can print the documents and handwrite the information or complete the fillable forms on the computer.

  4. Supporting Documents: Families will collect the required documents on the Welcome to School Checklist. The registration packet and supporting documents can be emailed, faxed, or mailed to the school. You will receive more information from division staff when you are contacted to schedule your appointment. Supporting documents include:

    • Proof of Residency in King George

In order to attend King George County Schools, students and their parent(s)/guardian(s) must be bona fide residents living in King George County. This means the family lives and sleeps in King George County. All documents must be current, valid, and reflect the address being used to enroll the student. In some circumstances, KGCS may request additional documentation.

      Documentation must include one of the following PRIMARY DOCUMENTS: homeowner/mortgage verification to include mortgage statement, deed, ratified sales agreement; and/or rental agreement/lease;

AND one of the following SECONDARY DOCUMENTS: real estate tax bill/statement, homeowner's/renter's insurance, current utility bill or letter of account from utility company (gas, electric, or water only).

    • Original Birth Certificate

Copies are not acceptable. If you need a new birth certificate in Virginia, information can be found at the Virginia Office of Vital Records. DMV is also able to assist in obtaining birth certificates.

    • Parent/Guardian Government issued picture ID

Examples include passport, driver's license, military ID card. This is to verify the identity of the enrolling parent.

    • Grade Report from previous school

Transcript (MS/HS) or report card (ES/MS); KGCS will request all other documents directly from the previous school at the time of enrollment.

    • Copy of student IEP or 504 (if applicable)

    • Custody Papers (if applicable)

Powers of Attorney, notarized guardianship papers, and other similar documents are not accepted for enrollment in KGCS. Custody must be adjudicated with the courts prior to enrollment.

  5. Registration Appointment: Appointments will be held virtually to the extent possible. The registration packet and supporting documents will be reviewed for accuracy and completion. Additional information will be collected as needed for individual student needs.

School Tours and Student Screenings
We are in the process of planning for new student meet and greets this summer. We hope students and families will have the opportunity to meet teachers and staff as well as tour the building if possible. Families are encouraged to sign up for Parent Portal and follow King George County Schools website and social media for announcements. Individual requests cannot be accommodated at this time.

In addition, the division is planning for student screenings. Typically, all kindergarten students are screened for school readiness skills, elementary students are screened for individual classroom needs, and middle and high school students may be screened for appropriate course placement. More information will be provided at a later date.

If you have any questions, please email your school registrar (contact information can be found here) or contact the Supervisor of Student and Family Services at Please include the subject line "New Student Registration - last name" and put your child's last name.
